Individual colour patches as multicomponent signals.
Colour patches are complex traits, the components of which may evolve independently through a variety of mechanisms. Although usually treated as simple, two-dimensional characters and classified as either structural or pigmentary, in reality colour patches are complicated, three-dimensional structures that often contain multiple pigment types and structural features. The basic dermal chromatoph...
متن کاملMulticomponent Multidimensional Signals
In this brief paper, we extend the notion of multicomponent signal into multiple dimensions. A definition for multidimensional instantaneous bandwidth is presented and used to develop criteria for determining the multicomponent nature of a signal. We demonstrate application of the criteria by testing the validity of a multicomponent interpretation for a complicated nonstationary texture image.
متن کاملTime-frequency representation of multicomponent chirp signals
This work deals with the analysis of chirp signals by means of time-frequency representation. We propose a chirp adapted time-frequency representation (CA) in which the interferences are significantly reduced. This method is applied to the analysis of acoustic echoes of a sphere target. Comparison of the results to other types of time-frequency distribution of the Cohen’s class shows that the i...
متن کاملShaping communicative colour signals over evolutionary time
Many evolutionary forces can shape the evolution of communicative signals, and the long-term impact of each force may depend on relative timing and magnitude. We use a phylogenetic analysis to infer the history of blue belly patches of Sceloporus lizards, and a detailed spectrophotometric analysis of four species to explore the specific forces shaping evolutionary change. We find that the ances...
متن کاملIndividual Channel Analysis of Two-Colour Microarrays
The traditional approach to the analysis of data from two-colour spotted microarrays is to compute the log-ratio of the expression values for each spot (Chen et al, 1997). The log-ratios are then treated as the responses in any statistical analysis of the data (Yang and Speed, 2003; Smyth, 2004). Relatively few papers have analysed spotted microarrays in terms of the separate red and green log-...
